Is Google Chrome Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
by Calvin Cox on February 10, 2010
Food For Thought: Is content still king or does Google Chrome rule when it comes to content targeted Ads?
Today I was browsing the web using Google Chrome for a dog grooming service. After doing my research at various grooming sites I opened another tab in Chrome to browse the recently added designers portfolios on Styleapple. We currently have one ad space for Google Ads, which 99.9% of the time shows Ads relevant to the content on our pages. i.e. design schools, freelance design jobs, web design firms, etc. However today it showed an Ad for a dog show. A DOG SHOW? Hmm.
I browsed the current content on Styleapple to see if any of the recently added designers were doing doggie portraits or developing websites for dogs to no avail. Then I thought: Does Google believe that your previous searches are more important than the content on the current web page?
What do you think: Is Google Chrome smarter than a 5th grader ?

You know what, now that I think of it the same thing happened to me. Just started using Chrome. Very scary.

And if you truly are serious about running an online business then you have to factor in the ongoing tweaks and marketing. Without even a basic SEO campaign your site will be lost in the millions of other websites out there. You will need to factor in a link building campaign or PPC, both of which will be an ongoing cost if you want to make the site work.

I agree that having your own website is the best way to self promote yourself, as long as you take into account link building and improving your rankings in search engines. There is little point having a great website if it’s buried in the search engines and nobody ever finds it. I also find linkedin pretty useful

Great article, however, I have a question and it’s something that’s been halting me in my steps. I would like to show my designs as I work on them as you mention above, but if I’m planning on developing them eg into rugs won’t I be making myself vulnerable to copyright theft? I will be registering my designs but won’t they still be ‘too exposed’ before being realised?

Hi Lena, I see your dilemma. You are absolutely right. You do not want to expose your fresh ideas to the public before they are realized. Only demo the ones that have been sketched, made and sold. These are the best ones to post on your blog anyway, simply because readers like to see a project from beginning to end.

Hi,
I’m a junior graphic designer, and I would like to register my designs as well, but do I do that?
